Chris Woakes, a former England fast bowler, has criticized the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) and managing director Rob Key for how they handled his exclusion from England’s 2025–26 Ashes squad. This move ended Woakes’s international career.
Chris Woakes played for England in 217 international games, 62 of which were Tests. His last Test match was against India at The Oval in August 2025. He showed a lot of resolve by batting in the fifth Test even though he had hurt his shoulder earlier in the game while fielding.
He worked hard, but it didn’t get him into England’s team for the Ashes tour of Australia. However, Chris Woakes later said that he was quitting international cricket right away.
After the news came out, Key paid tribute to the all-rounder and praised what he had done for English cricket.
Chris Woakes has now said that he has “barely spoken” to Key since he retired more than a year ago, and he is unhappy with how the situation was handled.

When asked about his relationship with Key, Chris Woakes said that he got along well with the ECB managing director in general, but that he thought the conversation about his future could have happened in private before the decision was made public.
