Punjab is looking to add expertise to its red-ball setup in order to erase a 34-year Ranji Trophy drought. The Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) has signed Umesh Yadav, a 38-year-old Indian pacer, as a guest player for the 2026-2027 domestic season, which is a significant move.

Umesh Yadav is the PCA’s first guest player, marking a significant milestone for the organization. The experienced spinner will represent Punjab in the upcoming Ranji Trophy season after securing a no objection certificate (NOC) from the Vidarbha Cricket Association (VCA).

Umesh has played nine T20Is, 75 ODIs, and 55 Tests for India. Along with winning the Ranji Trophy with Vidarbha, he brings to the Punjab setup a lot of local and international experience.

Amarjit Mehta, president of the PCA, supported Umesh Yadav’s choice and underlined the pacer’s qualifications.

Punjab thinks that Umesh’s expertise will help them compete for the Ranji Trophy this season, as they haven’t won it since 1992. Mehta confirmed that the team’s red-ball goals were considered before making the decision.

He also believes that Umesh’s skills will benefit Punjab’s younger players during the season.

Umesh Yadav will strengthen Punjab’s pace assault.

Concerns about the paucity of regular fast-bowling options also influenced Punjab’s choice to recruit Umesh Yadav. Punjab may not have enough speed bowlers for the domestic season because Gurnoor Brar and Arshdeep Singh are expected to join the Indian team.

Mehta added that Umesh’s signing was motivated by the necessity to strengthen the bowling department in the absence of their pacers who were leaving for India.

Umesh Yadav represented India in the World Test Championship final against Australia at The Oval in June 2023. Despite his age of 38, the pacer is likely to join Punjab’s Ranji Trophy training in the coming days.

Punjab’s coach, Amit Uniyal, welcomed the decision to include Umesh in the team, noting his bowling experience in Indian conditions.

Uniyal stressed that Umesh Yadav’s selection does not guarantee that he would play in every game, as the team’s lineup will ultimately decide the outcome.

Punjab’s Ranji Trophy campaign for 2026-27 will begin on October 11 against Assam in New Chandigarh. Umesh’s skill is expected to provide depth to their pace attack and dressing room.
