Abishek Porel, a wicketkeeper and batter, has been added to the 17-person Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) squad for the team’s first Ranji Trophy game of the season, which is a home game against Delhi in Kalyani. The most important thing to talk about in the announcement is his choice.
In the cricket league since IPL 2026, Abishek Porel has not played in a match. He was arrested by Kolkata police in August in connection with a case involving claims of rape and other sexual crimes. The CAB has gone ahead with his selection anyway, following the same process it used when it first called him back for Bengal’s practice games in Guwahati last month.
Abhimanyu Easwaran will lead the team, and Sudip Kumar Gharami will be his assistant. Mohammed Shami, Mukesh Kumar, and Akash Deep are all Indian internationals who play in the pace attack. Shahbaz Ahmed can’t play because he hurt himself during the Duleep Trophy.
Why did the CAB keep picking Abishek Porel even though he is in trouble with the law?
When Abishek Porel was called up for the practice games against Guwahati last month, a CAB official talked about it directly. According to the association, his off-field problems should not stop him from being selected unless a formal order said otherwise. He has now made that position even stronger by being named to the Ranji Trophy team.
How does Bengal’s team look before the start of the new Ranji Trophy season?
Bengal comes into this season riding high on the success they had last year, when they won their group and made it to the semi-finals, where they lost to the eventual winners, Jammu and Kashmir. The core of that team has stayed together, giving the team a stable look as they start their title fight.

Shami, Mukesh Kumar, and Akash Deep are all good at setting the pace, which is a clear strength. Along with Abishek Porel, Shakir Habib Gandhi covers at wicketkeeper. The team has seven standbys, which gives them depth in all areas, but Shahbaz Ahmed’s absence leaves a hole in the all-around role.
