Due to injuries, teenage all-rounder Lucy Hamilton and Australia captain Sophie Molineux will miss the next three-match ODI series against Bangladesh. Both players should recover in time for Australia’s Twenty20 International series against New Zealand later this month.
On Tuesday, Australia revealed a 14-player squad for the New Zealand T20Is and Bangladesh ODIs. The three-match ODI series between Australia and Bangladesh will be played in Brisbane from October 9 to 14, with Tahlia McGrath managing the Australian team.
If Molineux is unable to play in any of the three games against New Zealand in Sydney from October 18 to 22, current captain Ashleigh Gardner is expected to lead the T20I team.
Sophie Molineux will not participate in the ODI series against Bangladesh.
Sophie Molineux’s hip injury has not healed sufficiently for her to compete in the ODI series, according to national selector Shawn Flegler. The Australian skipper received an injury while returning from The Hundred, and his recovery has been slower than expected.
Sophie Molineux is expected to be available for Australia’s T20I series against New Zealand and will accompany the team on the tour.
Ashleigh Gardner will lead Australia against New Zealand.
McGrath has been named captain instead of Gardner for the Bangladesh One-Day Internationals because Sophie Molineux is unavailable. Since becoming vice-captain, the latter has not led Australia in any capacity.
Although Cricket Australia had supported Gardner’s retention as vice-captain, her leadership style had come under question following the disclosure of her relationship with teammate Georgia Voll.
In the event that Molineux is unable to play, Flegler has stated that Gardner will captain the New Zealand T20Is.
Lucy Hamilton is unavailable for the ODIs against Bangladesh.
Hamilton, meanwhile, is out of the Bangladesh series due to a minor quad strain suffered during training. Flegler believes the left-arm bowler will be fit enough to participate in the Twenty20 International series against New Zealand.
As a result, Australia will only have 12 players available for the three ODIs against Bangladesh, which will be played at Allan Border Field over six days.
Darcie Brown will miss both series due to a back injury sustained while on Australia’s A tour of India. Her injury could keep her out for up to 10 weeks, thus her availability for the Women’s Big Bash League remains uncertain.
