Yashasvi Jaiswal has shown himself to be a dependable option in India’s ODI lineup since making his debut against England on February 6, 2025. He is currently India’s third opener, adding depth to the batting order.

On September 27, 2026, India and the West Indies will begin a three-match ODI series. Prior to the series, former India pacer Irfan Pathan stressed the need of giving Jaiswal regular playing opportunities, saying, “There is one player who I will keep an eye on in this series.” Pathan told Star Sports, “He is Yashasvi Jaiswal. I’m eager to see how many opportunities he gets, especially in this one-day series in front of the West Indies.”

Why does Yashasvi Jaiswal require regular ODI opportunities?

The former bowler pointed out that the backup opening position requires a man who has been put through a lot of testing in international cricket.

One thing is certain, though: Yashasvi Jaiswal is your backup opener. He is currently your third opener. It shouldn’t be the case that your backup opener won’t have enough of chances by the time you get to South Africa for the ODI World Cup. He should therefore be present whenever the chance arises, in my opinion.

It’s necessary to test bench strength: Irfan Pathan

During the West Indies series, India has the ideal chance to assess the strength of its bench without endangering its starting team. India has chosen a second-string ODI squad for the series, with some players receiving their first or early call-ups. The team includes Naman Dhir, who was selected for his maiden ODI, and Auqib Nabi, who is also making his ODI debut. Nitish Kumar Reddy is another member of the team.

Pathan underlined that India can afford to evaluate emerging talent during a home series against the West Indies. By using this tactic, the team can develop players who are reliable replacements in crucial games.
