Shafali Verma, the opener for India, was officially reprimanded and given a demerit point for violating Level 1 of the ICC Code of Conduct during Sunday’s second Twenty20 International against Zimbabwe.
According to an ICC statement, Shafali Verma violated Article 2.2 of the ICC Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel, which deals with “abuse of cricket equipment or clothing, ground equipment or fixtures and fittings during an International Match.”
Shafali Verma had not committed an offense in the previous 24 months.
Shafali Verma lost a chance at mid-off presented by Chipo Mugeri-Tiripano off Sree Charani, and in the 12th over of Zimbabwe’s innings, he hurled the ball into the ground out of irritation.
There was no need for a formal hearing because Shafali Verma acknowledged the offense and agreed to the punishment suggested by match referee GS Lakshmi.
Level 1 violations result in one or two demerit points, a minimum punishment of an official reprimand, and a maximum penalty of 50% of a player’s match fee.
