India coach Gautam Gambhir said that West Indies pacer Roston Chase’s bowling performance was the most important factor in deciding the result of the game. Chase took three wickets for 24 runs during India’s innings, which meant that they couldn’t score as many runs as they could have. This meant that India couldn’t reach a higher score.

Gautam Gambhir was most interested in Chase’s tactics plan and how he used his variations on a Ranchi pitch with movement and bounce.

West Indies beat India’s score of 249 for 5 runs at the JSCA International Stadium Complex in Ranchi on October 9, 2026, with 252 for four wickets in 18.3 overs, which was a record. The win tied the five-match T20I series at one game each. Sherfane Rutherford scored 84 as part of a 120-run partnership that was very important in the chase. Shai Hope, who scored 102, stayed unbeaten. With 501 runs scored over 38.3 overs, it was the second-highest score in the history of men’s Twenty20 Internationals.

What Roston Chase’s versions did to change the game

Gautam Gambhir went into some specifics about the bowling strategies that helped Chase beat India’s top batting order. The Indian coach talked about how Chase’s ability to change things up kept the Indian batsmen guessing and stopped them from getting into a routine during the important middle overs of India’s game.

Even though India lost, Gautam Gambhir didn’t try to explain why India couldn’t hold on to their score, saying that the West Indies had better batting. He said that India’s bowling and fielding units needed to do better when playing against top teams, especially when protecting a score of more than 240 in Twenty20 Internationals.

What India did wrong to not protect 250

Gautam Gambhir also talked about Sherfane Rutherford’s dropped catch during the West Indies’ chase. He said that catching mistakes happen all the time in cricket and shouldn’t be the main reason for criticism. He stressed that the team needed to focus on things they could control in order to do better in upcoming games.

When asked if 250 was a safe score in modern T20I cricket, Gautam Gambhir talked about India’s strategy during the game and how good the West Indies’ batting was. He agreed that the West Indies’ aggressive approach and Hope and Rutherford’s partnership were too strong to contain, even though India had taken early wickets and made what looked like a good score.
