West Indies has not won a bilateral ODI series in India in 24 years, a streak Daren Sammy is determined to break when the teams meet in a three-match series beginning September 27 in Thiruvananthapuram. The series continues in Guwahati on September 30 and closes in New Chandigarh on October 3, coming at a key time for the Caribbean team as they prepare for the ODI World Cup qualifiers in February.
Daren Sammy saw the India series as both an immediate challenge and a strategic assessment opportunity prior to the qualifiers. The West Indies missed out on automatic qualification for the 2027 ODI World Cup, ranking 10th when only the top eight nations, excluding co-hosts South Africa, qualified directly. Even a clean sweep versus India would not be enough to overcome the qualification deficit, forcing the West Indies to enter the qualifiers for the third time.
Why does the India series crucial to the West Indies’ World Cup plans?
Daren Sammy underlined the necessity of doing well against India at home as a gauge of the team’s readiness for the international stage. The West Indies began their qualification cycle 19 to 20 points under the automatic qualification level, but earned points to finish only six points behind, displaying substantial progress despite missing out on direct participation to the World Cup.

Daren Sammy was also impressed with the debut of wristspinner Vitel Lawes. The 19-year-old made his ODI debut against New Zealand in July, taking eight wickets in five matches. Sammy also mentioned players like Shai Hope, Amir Jangoo, Sherfane Rutherford, and Alzarri Joseph as part of the team’s growing lineup.
